"I had two cases that I was hiring Valorie for. Once I paid the $1500 retainer for the first case I began making payments on the second retainer. She was aware of the court dates of the first case weeks in advance. The day of court, she calls me about an hour before and says she wasn’t going to be able to make it and she’d have a colleague (unrelated to her practice and completely in the dark on my case and the specifics) represent me. I asked if I needed to bring anything. She said no. When I arrived I was ordered to a drug test, which I completed. However, when a prescription I take for my epilepsy showed up, I didn’t have the bottle and my lawyer wasn’t there to explain my situation and diagnosis. I ended up doing 38 days in jail on a false positive drug screen. Valorie did little to nothing to get me out, seldom took my calls and was outright rude to my friends and family that attempted to contact her. I caught her lying to me which was the last straw. I fired Valorie and asked her to refund the money I had began paying her for the second case that she never ended up representing me on nor did we ever have a signed contract for. In fact, the only conversations we had regarding that case were her saying she wasn't available for the court date and therefore could not represent me. She refused to refund any of the nearly $2000 I paid her. The financial and legal consequences of hiring Smulders will forever haunt me. I’ve been encouraged by other attorneys to file a malpractice suit against her. Worst mistake I ever made with this entire legal situation was trusting this attorney. I strongly suggest you look elsewhere. Literally anywhere else."

"Val Smulder's went above and beyond for my child custody case. She was professional, fierce in the court room and exceeded my expectations. I meet with 5 different laywers and it was not until I meet with val did I feel the drive and determination I was looking for in an attorney. She was well prepared, always very quick to respond to my questions and I will ALWAYS seek help from this law office if needed again. I am a single mother and to be able to connect with an attorney that quickly means alot, I would recommend her to anyone! An added bonus, she has multiple offices near west michigan! Best choice I've ever made!."

"These lawyers do not do there research at all. I called a lawyer and turns out the year we spent trying to get something that was not even possible. The lawyer that I spoke with today said there was something in 1977 past that would not allow us to do what she was trying to do for us. They still took our money did not obviously do the research because I did the research and it was easy for me to find. These are the worst lawyers in Grand Rapids area and Newaygo area. Also if anyone would like to know they created a grand rapids site because on their newaygo one There are plenty of bad reviews. If you’re wanting to hire this lawyer look at every state that they have before you hire them because they can cover it up with a new website. In our experience we did not get good answers. Felt like asking questions was a problem for them. They could never answer what I needed. They took way to long for thing because of covid. Blamed a lot on covid and I don’t feel that they helped us at all. They really made us feel like all they want is money. DO NOT HIRE THESE PEOPLE. The really don’t respond to anything either."
