"It’s one of the best psychiatric facilities in the area but it is not perfect. First of all, UCI, as a hospital, is head and shoulders above other facilities in the area. They do the best they can given what they are tasked with. The advice given to me by the resident doctor(s) is generally good. It’s not without its share of problems, though. For one thing, the supervising doctors spend little time getting to know me as a patient, it seems. In addition, to this day they are treating a problem I do not understand in a way I don’t totally agree with. Unfortunately, once you are in the system it can be extremely hard to get out. I won’t stop trying, though, ever. I don’t blame UCI for my problems; I just wish they would see we are not at odds. I just want to be happy in life like anyone else would want to be. The medication I’ve taken for almost 19 years has not helped me but has had an enormous effect on my life in many ways that still have not been addressed or discussed. I hope seeing a therapist through UCI or elsewhere I’ll be able to further understand what I’m being treated for and get the help I need in my treatment. Like I said, I won’t stop trying to advocate for myself as someone who wishes I didn’t have to take medication. It’s one thing to be “stable,” but feeling the same all the time gets old fast too. It also means little to be stable if you can’t afford the cost of living and are effectively living in poverty. I hope my words are taken into consideration and UCI can stand by what they have prescribed me in how they proceed with my treatment, for example by providing me a therapist that works with my insurance. It might sound trivial but it is easier said than done. I recommend it as a facility if you need psychiatric help but, as I described, it isn’t perfect. Don’t ever give up on yourself; I won’t give up either"

"I was put here in the adolescent neuro psych ward for a week or so. Often with these reviews people complain about how they were forced to go, and yes it was involuntary but thats not the hospital’s fault. I had a pretty good experience. The food was great (except when the cafeteria workers went in strike), the kids were nice, and they covered safety issues very well. We did art or music therapy everyday and sometimes had ‘church’. We got to go outside twice a day and there were lots of games and no electronics. Most of my complaints are of the required practices- like shining a flashlight on your face every hour when sleeping, no shower/bathroom doors, no physical contact, etc. I do have to say, insurance and billing got dragged out a year and a half after i was discharged, and it is expensive. There was this nurse who playfully teased me, to my disliking, but it wasn’t detrimental. There was this sweet girl with schizophrenia who was put in solitary confinement because her roommates were scared of her. I felt so bad because she was put in a room on a separate side of the hospital and constantly ostracized. There were no safety concerns and I think that was really wrong. Most of the staff were super caring and kind and interactive with us. I got diagnoses i needed and medication (like 12 mg) to start me off into the world. It was really helpful and I often miss it."

"I have seen a lot of bad reviews. I hope I never experience the poor care that these people have experienced. My experience has been wonderful. Super easy making appointments, your psychiatrist follows up with you in my chart, they really listen to you and prescribe the right things and follow up to make sure it’s working. They have never made me feel like they aren’t taking me seriously. They have always listened and taken my statements and issues with compassion and solutions. I love this place. I have not received inpatient care, just general psychiatry, but I have loved it and recommend it. I hope I am not jinxing it by saying all of this because I see all of the bad reviews and hope that never happens to me. I literally love all of my psychiatrists. They are so so so sweet and professional. I don’t know if I would still be alive without them seriously, as dark as that sounds. Thank you so much for your consistant care."
