About:

Right out of law school, I knew I wanted to work in criminal defense. For two years, I served as an Assistant Public Defender in Roanoke, VA, my 1st murder case being only six months after I passed the bar. Finding a passion for criminal law, I went on to be a prosecutor in Newport News for 5 years, gaining invaluable trial experience and of the prosecutorial mindset. I recognized the importance of educating the next generation, teaching as an Adjunct Professor of Law at my alma mater, William & Mary. In 2002, I served as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Eastern District of Virginia for 6. Reflecting on her time working for both sides of the government, I was recently quoted by Super Lawyers Magazine as recognizing that “sometimes justice means you let someone go or you give them a chance for redemption.” I decided in 2008 to move to Northern Virginia and open my own law practice, incorporating as Taylor Law Company in 2011, where I practiced criminal law until joining a boutique firm in January 2022. In August 2023, I joined Scrofano Law PC to open the Fairfax, Virginia, office and lead the Virginia criminal practice group. I continue to represent defendants throughout Northern Virginia in both state and federal courts. I also represents individuals involved in protective order cases, expungements, school administrative matters and license and firearm rights restoration petitions. I have a particular passion for defending juveniles charged with crimes. As a parent of two teenagers, I can place myself in other parents’ shoes and can partner with them in rehabilitation. I am also one of the founding members of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association and currently a member of their Board of Directors. My practice has even expanded beyond defending just people, as I have successfully defended dogs who animal control believed were dangerous but were simply misunderstood.

"Gretchen is Absolutely AMAZING. She not only is an incredible lawyer that knows the system, the prosecutors, the best and most realistic and effective arguments to make, she is honest and upfront. If she gives advice TAKE IT. She knows what she is doing. More than that, the best part of my experience other than the phenomenal result of turning multiple felonies and a slew of misdemeanors into a plea for a couple minor misdemeanors was the fact SHE CARES ABOUT YOU AS A PERSON. She made contact with the other party and established a rapport that allowed her to talk sense to them and have them listen. I cannot say enough good things about her. Her staff, Fernando and Tatiana are also knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I have already referred her to a friend who is having a similarly GREAT experience."
