"I was introduced to Harlan Protass in 2015. By a close friend. At the time I was working on a petition based on a recent change to the sentencing guidelines titled Amendment 794. I thought this would be my chance at obtaining my freedom. I turned to Harlan for guidance and he dove in immediately. After months of research he advised against filing the petition. He told me it would be denied. I was heartbroken but I took his advice. All this was done on his part without any financial compensation. In 2016 I was transferred to Lexington ,Kentucky a medical facility to receive shoulder surgery. I stayed there for two years and 2018 I was redesigned back to USP Pollock Louisiana . One of the most dangerous Penitentiary’s in the country. I already knew the environment I would have to once again navigate. While I was at Oklahoma City transfer center the First Spey Act. Was signed into law. Harlan told me that the Compassionate release section of the act was my avenue to litigate my issue. But that I would have to maintain clear conduct. He told me that this was the only way. So I heeded his advice. I stopped using drugs. I was a heroine addict. This was the second most hardest thing I had ever done in my life. The first was renouncing my gang membership. People would try to offer me drugs for free and I would decline with all on my will power. I knew if I relapsed my only chance would be squandered. Next I joined the Challenge Program and commenced to work on my character and social skills.People who knew me from the years passed would say things like. You are not the same. Or you changed. I would tell Harlan about my daily struggles and he reassured me I was on the right track. Harlan worked tirelessly for years fighting to give me what feels like my first chance in life. He tailored a pristine petition that garnered praises from Honorable Judge McConnell . The presiding judge and here I stand today. A free man. Harlan has gone well beyond his obligation to represent me in court. He has become a life coach. A shoulder to lean on. A dear friend. Thank you Harlan for allowing me to spend my first Christmas home with my mother. She has not decorated a tree in 29 years. Thanks to you. We will celebrate together in the same state. In the same home. In each other’s arms. Sincerely, Giovanni Lara"

"Harlan was successful in getting federal charges against me dismissed in their entirety. It was a result that exceeded my expectations and for which I'm hugely grateful. In all our work together, Harlan was conscientious, reliable and trustworthy. I have no hesitancy in recommending him to represent anyone in a federal criminal case."
